It’s hard to judge England after one game, and when that game is a victory against a talented and experienced Serbia it becomes even more challenging.
The Three Lions won.
Shouldn’t we all be revelling in hope and belief about this landmark, don’t we always drop points in the first game at The Euro’s. Don’t we, doesn’t it, isn’t it.
It’s the hope that kills you. The opening stanza was one that wordsmiths would have rejoiced in, using words like flamboyance, elegance and maestros.
We looked very good, we dominated possession like Prime Pep Barca. We showcased little moments of magic within the midfield triangles…hell we even began to work out albeit awkwardly the Foden/Saka dilemma.
Or did we.
Phil Foden is an enigma. Phil Foden is a delightful football player. Phil Foden has a wand of a left foot. Phil Foden does it week in/week out in a Citeh shirt.
What’s happens to this magical protégée of Peps tutelage once furnished in an England jersey. Is it Southgate, Is it a new pressure, what is it!?

On the other wing we have a young man named Bukayo Saka, usually flowing and dancing in the colours of Gooner Red and grabbing match winning performances like it’s a walk in the park. For England, he’s effective, he’s decent, he’s dangerous and he’s integral to any sniff of winning this tournament.
But to win this tournament we need more than a decent Bukayo Saka game. We probably need another 10 Jude Bellinghams. Need we express this view further, probably not in this article.
So we rejoin at the whim of Phil Foden and let’s drag Harry Kane into this final deluge, because in order to win this tournament, in order to look anything like early tournament favourites we need to address old habits, old Southgate habits at that.
Is it right to watch Harry Kane complete a miserable 90 minutes with keen, eager, expressive forwards like Watkins, Eze and Toney watching on as Serbia dominate a second half where they merely switched up formation and decided to press high!?
I struggle with Southgate, I struggle with England.
It’s ok we’ll go and smash Denmark and Slovenia sing “it’s coming home” and await Mbappe and co. in the semis.
